A Moment Of Courage

I’ve been thinking about something that happened at one of my recent Women’s Singing Playshops, and I wanted to share it with you because it reminded me why I do this work.

At the Playshop, one participant chose to sing in front of other people for the first time in many years.

She’d spent the previous sessions joining in quietly, listening, taking part in the exercises and gradually getting to know the group.

Then, when she felt ready, she stood up and sang.

The room became completely still.

Not because anyone was judging her.

But because everyone recognised the courage it took to let herself be heard.

Watching that moment reminded me that singing isn’t just about learning technique.

Of course, healthy vocal technique matters. It gives us freedom, confidence and consistency.

But I’ve come to believe that something else matters just as much.

Feeling safe.

Because most people don’t need more confidence before they begin.

They need somewhere safe enough to begin before confidence has the chance to grow.

Whether it’s singing on a stage…

Speaking up in a meeting…

Giving a presentation…

Or simply expressing how you really feel…

Finding your voice often starts with believing it’s safe to use it.

That’s what I hope to create whenever I work with someone.

Not just a place to improve their voice…

But a place where they feel able to use it.

Because I believe the voice is meant to be expressed, not hidden.
